Pirveli Arkhi (First Channel) is Georgia’s oldest television channel, founded in 1956 and broadcasting regularly since 1960. It operated for decades as part of the State Television and Radio Corporation until that structure became the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) in January 2005, with First Channel Sport and the Second Channel as sister networks.
A 1972 transmitter upgrade on Mtatsminda extended nationwide reception to roughly 600,000 households, rising to 94% population coverage by 1981. Today the channel is available on television and online, with a schedule spanning news, current-affairs analysis, sports, documentaries, drama and entertainment. Its long-running news program Moambe anchored the evening lineup for decades, alongside formats like Political Week and the Georgian edition of MasterChef.
